Work commenced on a barn conversion near Ruthin at the end of February 2020, a matter of weeks before the Covid 19 outbreak! Work continued (except for a 4 week period at the start of lockdown) and was complete in December, taking 7 months to complete the project.
This 200 year old barn had its original character hidden under a grouping of modern sheeted lean-to additions over the years. In the early 1980s the south area was extended and adapted to provide a milking parlour and dairy.
Kartre wanted to give the barn a fresh feel using light coloured pointing and windows but wanted to also define the old and new.
The use of polished concrete parking areas reflect the ‘yard’ feel and the locally sourced burnt larch reflects the old barn doors in a modern application.
Internally the modern touches tied in with steel gives a continuity in the raw feel whilst providing open plan living and comfortable cosy spaces.
The outside covered open kitchen finishes off the property made for modern living. It’s a great example of mixing old with new.
Under floor heating, air source heat pump and whole house ventilation contributes to its eco credentials.
